Key Driving Skills for Teenagers

To help teenage drivers develop driving skills beyond what they learn in traditional driver education programmes, the Ford Motor Company together with the American Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) developed Driving Skills for Life. The program features hands-on driving events at sites throughout the US, and an interactive Web site—www.drivingskillsforlife.com—to reinforce safe driving techniques for young drivers.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

“Jackrabbit” is a term that has been used to describe the behaviour of a driver who constantly changes speeds and lanes, tailgates, and otherwise does not drive with the traffic flow. Jackrabbit drivers take risks. If the risks materialize they may escape unharmed, but others may not. Their unpredictability is distracting and upsetting to other drivers. Safe drivers are predictable drivers who communicate their intentions and do not surprise anyone.

Grad Parties and Teen Driving Don't Mix

“Proms” or “grad parties” for teens graduating from high school are one of the most common celebrations in June. The pattern seems to be that there are pre-Prom parties at private homes followed by the main event, usually held at a large gathering place like a school gymnasium or hotel ballroom, followed by a series of after-parties, some of which are also held in private homes.

Make Good Driving Decisions

Summer is the season for road trips. In planning their trip, travelers ponder when and where they will travel, where they will stay, what vehicle maintenance is required, how many hours of driving will be required each day, whether or not the driving can be shared, how much luggage each traveler can bring, and so on. Of summer road trips, some might say, borrowing from Yogi Berra—ninety percent of the trip is half planning.
