Fatal or nearly fatal accidents in the BC lower mainland, involving pedestrians or bicyclists, have been occurring almost weekly.
- Monday September 26–Ladner–a 45 year old woman, was hit face-on and dragged by one, or possibly two vehicles as she walked eastbound along the gravel shoulder of 24th Avenue sometime between 1:30 am when she left the pub, and 2:05 am when her body was found. She was dressed in black. 24th Avenue, a semi-rural road, has no streetlights in the stretch in which this hit-and-run occurred.
- Saturday October 15–Hope–a 21 year old man, was hit while riding his bicycle home from a party. His body was found shortly after midnight on Highway 7 near Chawathil Road. His bicycle did not have a light. This hit-and-run occurred in an unlit area.
- Thursday October 20–East Vancouver–A cyclist was hit and killed by a vehicle at East Broadway and Victoria at 7:30 pm. This was not a hit-and-run.
- Monday October 24–Surrey–A 71-year-old man crossing 132nd Street near 61st Avenue sometime during the evening was hit and killed by a vehicle. This was not a hit-and-run.
- Friday November 11–Vancouver– Three men were hit while crossing mid-block in the 1000 block West Hastings Street shortly after 1 am. Two were thrown about 50 meters from the point of impact. One, a 35 year old, died at the scene. Another, 31 years of age, died in hospital on November 21st. The third (who was not thrown) sustained only minor injuries. Police found the striking vehicle abandoned a few blocks away.
- Tuesday November 29–East Vancouver– An 86-year-old woman was struck by a car while she was walking in the north side crosswalk at 49th and Main Street at 6:20 am. She later died of her injuries. The striking car traveling southbound on Main Street, was driven by a 40-year-old Richmond man.
- Wednesday November 30–Vancouver –A 46-year-old man was hit and killed by a “dark car” while he was crossing Knight Street between 31st and 32nd Avenues at 11:30 pm. The striking vehicle (pieces found) was southbound on Knight Street.
- Saturday December 3–Burnaby–A 57-year-old man was hit and injured while he was in the crosswalk at Willingdon and the Lougheed Highway. Witnesses have reportedly identified the striking vehicle.
- Sunday December 4–Surrey–A tow-truck driver was hit and seriously injured by a pick-up truck on 152nd Street near 87th Avenue at 3:15 am. The pick-up driver did not stop but was pulled over by Surrey RCMP a few blocks away and has been charged with hit and run, and impaired driving.
- Sunday December 4–Ladner–A 68-year-old woman was hit and seriously injured by an eastbound car while she was crossing Ladner Trunk Road in the crosswalk at 55B Street around 5:30 pm.
What is the consistent theme about these accidents? Answer: They all occurred during hours of darkness.
